Elderly Care in Aventura FL
Bathroom safety is incredibly important for your elderly loved one. If you’re not sure where to start with updating your loved one’s bathroom, here are some ideas that can make the room one of the safest in the house.
Install Hand Rails
The best places for hand rails are in the shower, around the toilet, and anywhere else that there is enough wall space. Hand rails give your loved one something solid to grab in case she loses her balance or simply needs a little extra support as she moves through the room. Make sure that you install them properly with anchors so that they offer plenty of solid support.
Use Slip-resistant Rugs
Throw rugs are common choices for bathrooms because they’re easy to care for, but they can also be dangerous if you hit them the wrong way. To prevent that, choose rugs that have slip-resistant backings on them. You can still wash them, but they won’t present a hazard in the bathroom.
Install a Soap Dispenser
Soap dispensers are a great way to make sure that your loved one has easy access to liquid soap, shampoo, or conditioner, but she doesn’t have to mess with bottles or worry about dropping bars of soap in the shower. Make sure that you check on the levels at least once a week so that you can top up the dispensers as needed.
Use a Transfer Bench
A transfer bench is a bathroom tool that helps your loved one to get into and out of the tub more easily. Sometimes loved ones are concerned about using these because they can take up a good bit of space in the bathroom. Many do fold up, however, making them more compact when they aren’t in use.
Replace Glass Doors
Glass doors can be a hazard in the bathroom, especially if your loved one has balance issues. Replace them with shatter-resistant materials instead of glass. That way the bathroom is safer, but it still retains the same overall look and feel.
Add Night Lights
Night lights are an excellent tool, even during the day. They can help your loved one to see well enough to avoid obstacles without having to search out the light switch. Try using LED bulbs that use less electricity.
Try asking your loved one’s elderly care providers about any additional safety measures that you can add to your loved one’s bathroom.
