Senior Care in Coral Springs FL
As your loved one ages, her skin also ages. What worked in the past to keep her skin healthy may not work as well for her now. There may also be other dangers, such as hot water and products that contain irritating ingredients.
Let Her Know Exposure to Hot Water Can Dry Her Skin
If your loved one enjoys long, hot showers or soaking in the tub for a while it’s important to let her know that could damage her skin. This is particularly a problem if her skin is already dry because the heat and long exposure to water can make her skin even drier. The better option is to take slightly cooler showers and baths whenever able. It’s also important to keep them shorter rather than spending a long time in either the tub or the shower.
Shop for Fragrance-free Shampoo and Skin Care Items
Fragrances can be very irritating or drying for all skin types, but especially for elderly skin. When you’re shopping for any types of products that will touch your loved one’s skin, look for products that are mild and that have little or no fragrances added to them. If you’re in doubt, sniff the products before you buy them. Anything that smells like perfume has a fragrance that’s too strong.
Apply Lotion After Bathing
Applying some lotion while your loved one’s skin is still damp allows her skin to soak up the moisture more easily. Your loved one should towel dry and then apply a small amount of lotion to her skin. If she only has dry spots in certain areas, focusing the lotion in those places can help to keep them from drying out.
Avoid Sunburn and Windburn
Both the sun and the wind can burn your loved one’s skin, causing both damage and discomfort. Using a sunscreen is a good way to add protection, but your loved one might also consider a hat and long sleeves and pants when she’s outside for longer periods of time. if there is a lot of wind, try using a scarf or getting inside as quickly as possible to avoid getting burned by the wind.
Keeping your loved one’s skin in good condition is important for her overall health, but also for her comfort. If you need additional tips, talk to your loved one’s doctor or to her senior care providers.
